Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a firearms licence to join the club?

To join our club and be a shooting member you need to have a current Category A NSW Shooters licence, with target endorsement. The club has Firearms Safety Awareness officers who conduct the Safety and Training course required to obtain a firearms licence.

What if I have a licence already?

Providing you have a minimum of a Class A Licence with a target shooting endorsement, we prefer people to participate in 4 shoots with the club before becoming members. This is to the advantage of both the club and the individual, as no-one wants to pay out money and then find they don’t enjoy the sport or the club.

How much does it cost to get a licence?

To get a firearms license from "scratch" can cost up to approximately $330 for a five year adult licence. The actual cost can vary depending upon such things as minor’s permits, pensioner’s discounts, and actual club fees. It is best to discuss your individual circumstances with the club.

So how much does it cost to shoot?

At present the club has 3 "club rifles" (BRNO Model 2) at a hire cost of $2.00. Front stands and rear bags available at no cost. Suitable ammunition is available at cost price, which is around $5 per box of 50 bullets. The cost of ammunition, coupled with a range fee of $7 members, visitors $9.00 means you have a cheap night out. Just compare these costs with a round of golf and you’ll quickly see the value.

If I buy my own rifle and gear, how much does it cost?

That’s a bit like asking how long is a piece of string. You can be competitive in most club activities for under $1,000 if you look around at second hand equipment in good condition. BRNO Model 2 rifles are a good starting point and they sell from $400 upwards for one in good condition. One thing of great important is optics. A minimum of a variable 6-24 power scope is recommended and the old saying "you get what you pay for" is true. That does not mean you should buy the most expensive, but steer clear of the unknown brands and second hand scopes.

What is the best ammunition?

The best ammunition is the ammunition that shoots well in your particular gun. There are no "hard and fast rules" here. There are too many variables such as the rifling (twist rate in the barrel) and barrel length to give a definite answer. What is recommended is to try various types of ammunition and when one type is found to shoot well in your particular rifle, then buy as much as you can of that particular batch.

What is the best rifle?

Generally if you don’t already have one, a BRNO model 2 is a suitable beginners rifle or a CZ. As people become more "serious", they tend to buy a "heavy barrelled" target rifle such as an Anschutz (any Anschutz with a Match 54 trigger is a good investment), BRNO Model 4, Walther, and of course Martini actioned rifles. There are a number of other rifles that are suitable, however they are too numerous to mention. If you should buy a model 2 BRNO type rifle and then move on to a heavy barrelled rifle, don’t worry, your "light barrelled" rifle is still good for Hunter Rifle type competitions.

Is this activity safe? Can anyone participate?

Target Shooting is the 5th largest participation sport in the state of NSW. It also ranks as one of the safest sports you can participate in.

Any final pieces of advice?

Yes...simply come along and see what happens. When you become a member, you will be competing against people with similar standard of ability in the appropriate grade, but remember the person you are competing against is yourself. This is not a sport in which he who spends the most money wins. The person with the most ability will overcome all others in the end.
